Mars, Incorporated has launched a new online Adoption Hub to assist prospective and current pet owners, based on global research that reveals nearly one-third of current pet parents are interested in adopting but face concerns regarding pets' health, behavior, and compatibility. This research, the largest pet adoption study to date, was conducted among over 26,000 individuals across 14 countries.

The study found that 58% of current pet owners did not adopt their pets, while 28% expressed a desire to adopt in the future if provided with adequate support. Common concerns included uncertainty about an animal's medical history (33%), behavioral issues (27%), and whether the pet would fit into their household (25%). The research underscores the need for expert guidance to help potential adopters navigate these anxieties.

Ahead of the 2026 Global Adoption Weekend, Mars aims to enhance understanding of these barriers as part of the broader Mars State of the Pet Homelessness Project. The event will expand from last year, reaching over 30 countries and supporting more local shelters.

Veterinarian Esther Bijsmans advised that adopting a pet is rewarding but requires practical guidance. She highlighted the importance of a gradual introduction to a new diet for pets after adoption, noting that 71% of adopters change their pet’s food post-shelter.

To ease the adoption process, the Mars Adoption Hub will feature expert-backed information and resources developed in collaboration with the Waltham Petcare Science Institute. Anthony Guerrieri, Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Mars, emphasized that proper guidance can empower potential adopters, allowing them to feel confident in their decision to bring a new pet home.

Mars aims to highlight the fulfillment that comes from adoption, such as seeing adopted pets become comfortable in their new environments and feeling like part of the family. With a commitment to making responsible pet ownership accessible, the Mars Adoption Hub will facilitate connections with participating shelters during the Global Adoption Weekend.
