Kane County, Illinois officials announced on Thursday that certain one-year rabies vaccines given to pets during vaccination clinics between August and October 2025 may have lost potency and have now been recalled. It is important to note that receiving a vaccine from this batch does not indicate that any affected pet has rabies or is unwell. However, testing has shown that the vaccines may not be effective as intended.
Elanco has supplied Kane County Animal Control with around 400 replacement doses to be administered at no cost to pet owners. In addition, letters have been sent to the owners of the affected animals to inform them of the situation.
Pet owners interested in receiving a voluntary revaccination should make an appointment by contacting Kane County Animal Control at 630-232-3555. The county also highlighted that some of the vaccines from the affected batch are set to expire as early as next month, and Illinois law mandates that pets must have a current rabies vaccination.
