Massachusetts animal shelters are organizing a weekend-long adoption event aimed at placing adult dogs into new homes. From Friday, July 24, through Sunday, July 26, the MSPCA-Angell and six partners in the Massachusetts Animal Shelter Support coalition will waive adoption fees for dogs aged one year and older.

This event, themed "World Pup" as a nod to the World Cup soccer tournament, is the second of three scheduled fee-waived adoption initiatives this summer. Jamie Garabedian, project manager in MSPCA-Angell's Animal Protection Division, noted that summer presents unique challenges, with high intake rates and a decline in adoptions.
Garabedian emphasized that fee-waived events, along with support from the coalition, have improved the chances for more animals to find homes quickly, which helps free up space for other pets. The event coincides with the second anniversary of the coalition, which has successfully placed 1,350 dogs and 357 cats into homes since its inception.
Participating shelter locations include all four MSPCA-Angell adoption centers in Boston, Methuen, Salem, and Centerville, as well as the Berkshire Humane Society, Boston Animal Control, Dakin Humane Society, Lowell Humane Society, Thomas J. O’Connor Animal Control & Adoption Center, and Worcester Animal Rescue League. Garabedian remarked on the excitement of involving multiple shelters, stating, "Together, we're able to make an even greater impact than we could on our own."
