Janna Brown from the TJO Foundation noted an increase in abandoned and lost animals from nearby Springfield, Chicopee, and Holyoke. Due to the overcrowding, the shelter cannot take in owner surrenders. Brown explained that the facility is inundated with animals that have been abandoned or lost.
In response to this crisis, the shelter is not only seeking assistance but also providing support to pet owners in need. The Reese Pet Food Initiative is supplying local food pantries with free pet food to help those struggling financially. Brown encouraged those in need to visit the Lorraine Soup Kitchen in Chicopee or the Gray House in Springfield for assistance.
To address the overflowing population of animals, the TJO shelter will host an adoption event, waiving fees for dogs over one year old. They are also actively seeking foster families to help provide a better environment for the dogs, as they tend to thrive outside the shelter setting. Brown mentioned that every effort, whether it’s adopting, fostering, or donating pet food, contributes to giving these animals a second chance.
