The application period coincides with increased vet costs in Europe, with new pricing regulations recently enacted in the UK and significant price hikes for cat vet visits in Germany. Such economic factors underscore the potential value of startups that prioritize preventive care.

Cohort 11 is scheduled to start on March 30, 2027, and follows a successful previous cohort that attracted over 300 applications from more than 40 countries. The 12-week hybrid program will provide startups with mentoring, operational support, and access to resources from Mars Petcare, TAW Ventures, and Michelson Found Animals.

Additionally, Leap Venture Studio offers an Impact Seat, dedicated to one company that primarily focuses on benefiting the pet care community. Both for-profit and non-profit organizations can apply for this seat, with past recipients including myBalto Foundation and BestyBnB. Applications for the Impact Seat also close on October 18.

Founders interested in learning more can attend a final virtual information session on October 7 from 1:00 to 2:00 PM PT. Rachel Sheppard, Director of Ventures at Mars Petcare, emphasized the program’s focus on startups that implement scientific methods to enhance pet health and quality of life.

In the UK, pet ownership has reached 36.5 million, with dog ownership increasing significantly. Recent reforms by the Competition and Markets Authority mandate that larger vet groups must provide itemized bills and cost estimates starting December 22, 2026, while smaller practices have until March 2027 to comply. This transparency is expected to prompt pet owners to explore preventive care options.

Research indicates that dental health is a concern for pet owners; a study from the Royal Veterinary College reports that gum disease affects 15.2% of UK cats, increasing with age. This aligns with trends as investors support UK brands like Fresh cat food company KatKin, which raised $50 million in December 2025.

In Germany, cats outnumber dogs, with 15.7 million cats and a pet sector generating nearly €7 billion annually. The introduction of a vet fee reform in late 2022 significantly raised costs for owners, particularly affecting cats. This has led to a surge in pet insurance policies, with companies like Lassie raising funds to enhance preventive care offerings.

On a broader scale, Europe is home to 306 million pets across 140 million households. Euromonitor’s recent report highlights a rising demand among pet owners for health claims supported by scientific evidence, favoring businesses that can present clinical proof of their solutions. Startups focused on feline health, aging pets, or affordable care are encouraged to apply to Leap Venture Studio’s Cohort 11 before the deadline.
