Ms. Wiseman admitted to caring for dogs without a license on property off Upper Bourne End Lane, Hemel Hempstead, from June 13, 2024, to January 21, 2025. However, she denied allegations of neglecting the dogs’ needs on land off Cupid Green, Hemel Hempstead, between November 1, 2022, and June 13, 2024.
During the proceedings, Ms. Wiseman gave evidence alongside four witnesses, including two daycare clients who defended her by stating that dogs had access to food and water, and denied any claims of abuse or encouraging fights among the dogs.
Robert Wiseman, the defendant's father, also testified, discussing his involvement in helping his daughter with dog care. He disputed claims made by a former employee regarding an unsafe incident involving dogs on November 30, 2022, suggesting the claims were exaggerated.
The prosecution, led by barrister Ellis Sureen, argued that witness testimony indicated severe welfare issues, including reports of dogs kept overnight in unsanitary conditions and too many dogs being transported in vehicles. The prosecution highlighted that former employees noted frequent fights among the dogs and questioned Ms. Wiseman’s reliability, citing her admission to misleading council officials.
Sureen criticized the defense for lacking substantial supporting evidence, claiming that absence of record-keeping could significantly influence the court’s decision. He framed Ms. Wiseman as having a serious credibility issue, noting her acceptance of misleading practices.
Defending her case, barrister Mercedes Pascal insisted that the charges of licensing violations and welfare requirements should be considered separately. She argued that dogs were not kept for excessive periods in the unlicensed property and emphasized Ms. Wiseman's commitment to the dogs’ welfare, as supported by testimonies from satisfied clients.
The judge has reserved judgment and is set to announce the verdict on Thursday, September 24 at 10 am.
