A new memorandum of understanding consolidates the horse herds of the College of Veterinary Medicine and the Department of Animal Sciences within ACES at the St. Mary’s Road horse farm. This consolidation is expected to improve learning opportunities for students from both units. The College of Veterinary Medicine, which has traditionally managed a larger herd, will now oversee the daily management of all horses and related facilities to enhance operational efficiency.
Faculty and students from both colleges will continue to engage with the herd for teaching, research, and experiential learning. Dan Shike, the department head of Animal Sciences, highlighted that this agreement optimizes the use of the horse farm and shared resources, ensuring vital equine learning experiences for students.
Jim Lowe, executive associate dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, noted that aligning resources strengthens the educational experience and utilizes facilities more effectively. Both colleges anticipate that the horse farm will serve as a shared resource for veterinary training, undergraduate instruction, and experiential learning opportunities in the future.
