Greene County will take over the operation of a cat shelter from the Madison-Greene Humane Society, following an announcement made by the Greene County Board of Supervisors on October 13. The transition is set to occur due to a notice received from the humane society indicating they will stop providing shelter services by December 31, 2026.

Steve Catalano, chair of the Board of Supervisors, noted that a letter dated September 3 from the humane society's attorney cited non-compliance with Virginia law regarding animal shelter operations. Under state law, localities must provide animal shelters, though they can outsource these services. Currently, Greene County operates a facility designated for canine care only.

Catalano explained that the letter served as a 120-day notice of the cessation of services, due to escalating operating costs and limited resources. He emphasized that the county aims to ensure ongoing care, protection, and adoption services for cats within the community. The humane society’s leased facility is located at 37B Jeri Allen Way in Ruckersville, where they have operated since August 2018.

In a separate development, the Charlottesville Redevelopment and Housing Authority (CRHA) announced the intention to retain Executive Director John Sales through December, despite his formal departure. The CRHA is also in the process of acquiring additional housing units from various property owners.

The Charlottesville Planning Commission recently reviewed a draft of the city’s Climate Adaptation and Resilience Plan. This plan aims to address the effects of climate change, including rising temperatures and severe weather. Emily Irvine, the city’s climate program manager, highlighted ongoing efforts to include community input in these initiatives.

Furthermore, JackFest, a community festival supporting families with children facing serious illnesses, is scheduled for October 18 at Foxfield in Albemarle County. The event will feature various activities for all ages and aims to raise funds for the Ronald McDonald House in Charlottesville.
