A small kitten named Gelato is gaining mobility thanks to a custom wheelchair designed by Cincinnati Animal CARE. The shelter took in Gelato after he sustained a spinal injury that weakened his back legs. Dr. Amanda Gilbert, the shelter's Medical Director, expressed optimism about Gelato's chances for a full recovery, citing his young age as a positive factor. As Gelato began to heal, he showed a desire to stand and play, prompting veterinary assistant Mallory Smith to create a mobility device from everyday materials on hand, including wooden rulers, zip ties, and tape, with Hot Wheels as a key component.
Smith reported that Gelato has already started using his legs and is able to stand and bear weight on his own. Currently, Gelato is in foster care with Smith, while the shelter continues its mission of helping over 9,000 animals each year. Cincinnati Animal CARE is also seeking to expand its team by hiring additional veterinary assistants, a medical scheduler, and a surgery administrative coordinator, with application details available on their website.
