PAINESVILLE, Ohio — The Lake County Dog Shelter has made several improvements to ensure the comfort of its dogs after experiencing an air conditioning failure during a heat wave just before the Fourth of July. Lake County Commissioner Morris Beverage III acknowledged the challenges posed by the aging system, stating, "We know it's an older system; we know repairs can be difficult to manage."
The air conditioning problem also prompted a review of shelter policies and procedures. Beverage noted, "We took this opportunity to take a look at the big picture of how do we want the dog shelter to operate moving forward." In response to community concerns regarding the handling of euthanized animals, the shelter has partnered with a new company for cremation services, allowing for ashes to be spread on their property.
Additionally, the shelter has collaborated with the Lake Humane Society to facilitate the evaluation of dogs for adoption. All adopted animals will be spayed or neutered before leaving the shelter. Beverage emphasized the importance of veterinary care, mentioning a standing weekly appointment with a local vet to ensure dogs are examined promptly. Currently, engineers are assessing the building’s mechanical systems to devise a long-term strategy for the aging HVAC system.
