National Kitten Day Celebrated with Live Kitten Cam

These kittens, a mix of ginger, calico, tuxedo, and tortoiseshell, were discovered by college students and brought to a Philadelphia shelter on June 19. Widget, estimated to be around three years old, was later found and reunited with her kittens on the same day. Currently, they are at KitKat Playroom, a nonprofit kitten rescue in Woodbury, New Jersey, which livestreams kittens from their arrival until adoption. The organization aims to educate the public on kitten care and promote higher adoption rates through their streams.

Each kitten has distinct features: Trinket is a female with dark tortoiseshell coloring; Doohickey is a male ginger wearing a blue collar; Jawn is a male ginger in a red collar; Tchotchke is a female calico with an orange neck and white belly; Gizmo is a male tuxedo with a black and white nose and white on his chin and left side, wearing a green collar.

Foster care is crucial for the survival and health of young kittens. According to the Best Friends Animal Society, kittens under six weeks old make up 47.5% of cat deaths, highlighting the importance of foster support during their neonatal stage. Foster homes provide necessary care, such as bottle feeding and warmth, and free up shelter resources for other animals.

Research by Best Friends Animal Society and Dr. Julie Levy at the University of Florida indicates that kittens around eight weeks old are typically healthier and ready for adoption, making foster care essential for transitioning them to permanent homes.
