Residents are advised to vaccinate their dogs and cats against rabies and to be vigilant for any sick animals exhibiting unusual behaviors, such as drooling, limping, or aggression. Any suspicious animals should be reported to the police.

If an individual is bitten by an animal, they should wash the wound with soap and water and seek medical attention at a local clinic immediately, as rabies can be fatal if not treated.

In cases where pets are bitten or scratched by a wild animal, residents should contact YKHC’s Office of Environmental Health and Engineering. The YKHC also advises against shooting animals in the head, as the brain must remain intact for rabies testing. For assistance, call 907-543-6420 or email [email protected].
