SARASOTA, Fla. - Friends of Manatee County Animal Welfare is celebrating a decade of support for shelter animals with a special event this Sunday. Rebecca St. Jean from Friends of Manatee County Animal Welfare explained that the organization aims to meet the additional needs of shelter cats and dogs. Over the last ten years, they have identified gaps in resources and channeled the funds they raise directly toward improving the lives of shelter animals.
To commemorate this milestone, the organization will host a 10th Birthday Bash from noon to 4 p.m. at Dog Bar Sarasota. The event will feature raffles, a silent auction, food, and adoptable animals from shelters. Attendees are welcome to bring their dogs or come without pets.
Dog Bar Sarasota owner Mark “Sharky” Coxson highlighted the venue's commitment to animal welfare, noting that 17 dogs have been adopted from his business in the past eight months. Those who adopt a dog during the event will also receive a one-year membership at Dog Bar Sarasota.
In addition to celebrating their achievements, the event aims to raise awareness about the ongoing challenges faced by animal shelters. St. Jean described the situation as being at “crisis level,” citing the high costs of animal care and veterinary expenses as significant factors.
For those unable to adopt, fostering is another option to help. Even providing a temporary home for a dog over a weekend can allow the animal to unwind and showcase its personality. St. Jean emphasized that everyone can contribute to alleviating the pressures on shelters.
Those planning to attend with a dog are encouraged to pre-register with Dog Bar Sarasota. Dogs must be sociable with others and have up-to-date parvo and rabies vaccinations. Additionally, dogs over one year old must be spayed or neutered.
