LOGAN — Utah State University (USU) has unveiled the Thomas and Patricia Willis Veterinary Medical Education Building, which will enhance its veterinary science program. This facility marks the establishment of the first full veterinary medicine degree program in Utah, featuring labs, surgery rooms, and clinical spaces designed to give students practical experience in the field.

Alexis Sweat, a clinical skills course coordinator at USU, expressed excitement about the building's opening. Sweat, who graduated when the program required completing the final two years at Washington State University, noted how this new facility will enable graduates to practice in their communities or pursue further specialization.
The need for veterinarians is particularly acute in Utah, especially in rural regions that support the state's agricultural sector, which contributes approximately $1.82 billion to the economy. Incoming first-year student Katelyn Drake shared her enthusiasm, stating that she is eager to start her studies after working for a couple of years following her undergraduate degree.
Sweat highlighted that students will have opportunities to engage in clinical situations, participate in research, and perform surgeries within the new building. The program has enrolled 40 new students for its inaugural year starting in August 2025, with plans to double that number in the upcoming academic year.
"It's an impressive opportunity for the students to experience all that learning in one place," said Sweat. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new building is scheduled for August 28.
