Nine SUNY Canton Veterinary Technology Graduates Accepted Into Veterinary Schools

SUNY Canton has announced that nine graduates from its Veterinary Technology program have been accepted into prestigious veterinary schools for the fall 2026 semester. These graduates are from the classes of 2024, 2025, and 2026.

During a recent pinning ceremony, Kailey Zimmerman, a Veterinary Technology major from Dexter, received congratulations from Assistant Professor and Equine Veterinarian Dorothee Gilmore. Zimmerman is among the accepted students.

Gaining admission to veterinary colleges is known to be highly competitive in the United States. To qualify, students must complete rigorous coursework and maintain a high GPA, as well as gain hands-on experience working with animals in veterinary settings. As a result, many graduates may choose to take a gap year to accumulate the necessary experience before applying.

According to Dr. Wendy K. Kuceyeski, director of the Veterinary Science Technology program at SUNY Canton, approximately 15,000 students apply to veterinary schools each year, with only 3,800 being accepted. "We are incredibly proud of the work our students have put forth to be among this elite group," she stated.

The SUNY Canton graduates accepted into veterinary schools include:

- Daniel Benham, class of 2025, Louisiana State University and Midwestern University

- Michael Berry, class of 2024, Centro Universitário Internacional, Brazil

- Taylor Cady, class of 2024, Cornell University

- Caroline Hookey, class of 2025, Ross University and Long Island University

- Marijke Kroon, class of 2026, Kansas State University

- Laura Martino, class of 2025, Ross University

- Karyssa Maynard, class of 2026, Tufts University

- Madi Seguin, class of 2025, Louisiana State University

- Kailey Zimmerman, class of 2026, Ross University and Ohio State University

At the conclusion of the pinning ceremony, students recited a pledge, marking their transition into the veterinary field.

SUNY Canton is one of only 20 institutions in the United States to offer a Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Technology, which builds on its Associate of Applied Science in Veterinary Science Technology. The program boasts a 90% national exam pass rate for graduates who take the exam within five years.
