Rabies is a known threat, affecting both animals and humans and usually resulting in death once symptoms manifest. However, dogs face additional risks from infectious diseases such as canine influenza, distemper, and leptospirosis, which also have serious consequences and well-established vaccines available.

Canine influenza, for example, is essentially the flu for dogs, caused by adapted strains of the influenza A virus. The two main strains in the U.S. are H3N8, originating from horses, and H3N2, which was introduced from abroad. The disease spreads rapidly; nearly every exposed dog becomes infected, showing symptoms like coughing and fever. Some develop pneumonia from secondary infections, which can be severe. Importantly, dogs can spread the virus before appearing sick, making outbreaks challenging to control. Even when not widespread, local outbreaks continue to occur, warranting vaccination for dogs frequently in contact with others.

Distemper, in contrast, has a long history and is highly contagious, posing severe risks to dogs and wildlife alike. This disease can begin with common symptoms but can escalate to neurological damage, seizures, and severe respiratory issues. Prior to vaccinations, distemper was responsible for high mortality rates, particularly in puppies. The vaccination process starts early in puppies to ensure their developing immune systems are protected.

Leptospirosis, caused by bacteria from infected animals’ urine, can lead to severe kidney and liver damage. Dogs can contract it from contaminated water or soil, making it a risk even in urban environments. Symptoms can escalate quickly, and although it can affect dogs, it can also pose risks to humans through contact with infected animals' urine. Recent advancements in vaccines have improved their effectiveness against the strains causing disease.

The interconnectedness of animal, human, and environmental health underscores the significance of these vaccines. Vaccinated dogs reduce the chance of disease transmission not only among canines but also to humans through shared environments. Protecting animal health is intrinsically linked to human health, as the presence of vaccinated dogs contributes to overall public health and safety.

While rabies remains critical, it is only part of the broader picture of pet vaccination. Dog owners are encouraged to consult their veterinarians about the appropriate vaccination schedule for their pets, as these recommendations are grounded in extensive research and aim to safeguard both animal and public health.
