Susana Ramos, the States vet, acknowledged that while cases of leptospirosis are "relatively infrequent," they do occur occasionally. She emphasized that vaccination is the most effective way to prevent the disease and encouraged pet owners to discuss vaccination options with their private veterinarians.
Leptospirosis spreads through the urine of infected animals, such as rats, and dogs can contract the disease from contaminated water or soil. The illness can lead to severe and sometimes fatal outcomes, with symptoms in dogs including vomiting, diarrhea, tiredness, loss of appetite, and increased thirst.
