Veterinary staff are in the process of confirming the virus through testing and are taking necessary precautions to safeguard the health of the other cats. Enhanced cleaning and disinfection measures are being implemented to prevent any further spread. While cat adoptions and intake are on hold, dog and small animal adoptions will continue as normal. Additionally, adult cats currently in foster homes are still available for adoption.
The shelter stated that all cats and kittens receive vaccinations for panleukopenia immediately upon arrival and that they adhere to strict protocols to curb the spread of illness. Despite these measures, the virus can still be introduced by cats that may have been previously exposed. Consequently, the organization emphasizes a quick and careful response whenever there is a suspicion of the virus.
MHHS has reached out to adoptive families whose cats may have been in contact with the affected animals. They report that the risk to any adopted cats remains low. However, they advise that anyone whose newly adopted cat displays symptoms like lethargy, diarrhea, or vomiting should contact them as well as their veterinarian without delay. It is important to note that feline panleukopenia does not pose any risk to humans, dogs, or other small animals.
For those looking to support the shelter during this time, donations of large towels, hand towels, washcloths, and pillowcases are welcome to assist with daily cleaning and care.
