Deeby’s Senior Chihuahua Rescue Supports Small Dog Adoption in Bloomington-Normal

Deeby’s Senior Chihuahua Rescue in Bloomington-Normal is drawing attention to the needs of smaller dog breeds and has received additional funding to support its mission. Founded in 2021 by Tobi Griffin, the rescue was established in memory of a Chihuahua named Muad’Dib, affectionately called Deeby. Griffin, who previously favored larger breeds, found herself devoted to Chihuahuas after meeting Deeby, describing him as an old, lovable dog.

In 2025, the rescue successfully placed 188 dogs into adoptive homes, contributing to a total of over a thousand adoptions since its inception. Recently, the organization was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Grey Muzzle Organization, which focuses on aiding older dogs. This funding will assist with veterinary and dental care for the animals in their care.

Griffin emphasizes that Chihuahuas are often misunderstood and frequently end up in shelters. She noted that they rank as the second most common breed in shelters, following pit bulls. The perception that Chihuahuas can be aggressive stems from improper socialization and their tendency to bond closely with one person. Despite these stereotypes, Griffin asserts that many of the dogs they rescue are friendly.

The organization has also expanded its focus to include other small breeds, such as Sid, a two-year-old Toy Poodle, and Meringue, a three-year-old Pomeranian. Some of the dogs come from challenging backgrounds, including hoarding situations, and require extra care. Griffin explained that small dogs often feel threatened by larger breeds and rely on their teeth for protection.

To help alleviate pain-related aggressive behavior, many small breeds need dental care as they age. The Grey Muzzle Organization’s grant will assist in covering some of these costs. Additionally, the rescue accepts monetary donations to further support their work. All dogs live in foster homes, allowing the rescue to better understand their needs and personalities.
