Bek is set to begin a one-year small animal rotating internship at VCA Emergency Animal Hospital & Referral Center in San Diego after graduation. Her fascination with emergency and critical care lies in the unpredictability of the field.
“Emergency medicine is fast, it’s unpredictable, and each day brings something new,” Bek stated. “There’s nothing more rewarding than stabilizing a sick or injured animal and reuniting them with their owner.”
During her time in veterinary school, Bek has focused significantly on her experiences in the small animal ICU, a realm she has been involved in since her first year. She emphasizes that the community surrounding her—comprising classmates, faculty, the Emergency and Critical Care Club, and even a favorite local coffee shop—has played a crucial role throughout her academic journey.
“The friends I’ve made here are a huge part of helping me get through the past four years,” she noted, mentioning her gratitude towards Gypsy Java lotuses for supporting her during her education.
Her work in the ICU and on various clinics has honed not only her clinical skills but also the mindset needed in veterinary practice. “One of the biggest things I’ve learned is that it’s never embarrassing to be wrong or to ask for help,” she remarked. “If anything, that’s how you get better.”
As a fun fact, Bek plans to take up surfing once she relocates to California.
