Old Dominion Humane Society Celebrates 10,000th Dog Adoption

Founded by Chrissy Hamilton in 2013, ODHS began with a passion for animals, a few jobs at veterinary clinics, and some dog crates. Over the last thirteen years, the organization has become a significant asset in the Fredericksburg area, hosting successful adoption events and rescuing numerous dogs from abusive situations.

Ripley was adopted in August by Athena Darratt, who initially fostered him. Darratt quickly grew attached to his friendly personality. "He’s great with all things," she said, noting that he acclimated to potty training quickly and even learned to ring a doorbell to signal when he needed to go outside. Darratt described him as a sweet dog who loves children and other animals.

On average, about 1,200 dogs enter the shelter each year, many of whom would likely face euthanasia if not for ODHS. The organization credits its achievements to Hamilton's commitment to rescuing dogs from neglect, mistreatment, and other dire situations.

“It’s been a labor of love,” Hamilton stated. She emphasized the importance of giving every rescue a second chance to live a fulfilling life and to trust humans once again.
