Tucker became an inseparable companion, eager to go for rides in the car or on Ek's mobility scooter. The two often spent hours together in Ek's shop, where Tucker would lounge in the sun while Ek worked.

Ek soon realized that Tucker was more than just a pet; he played a crucial role in managing Ek's diabetes. After Ek collapsed on the porch due to low blood sugar, Tucker alerted his wife by howling. "Ever since, he’d warn me when my sugar got too low and start clawing at me," Ek stated. Tucker was eventually registered as a service dog for his remarkable ability to sense such changes in Ek's health.

As a semi-retired radio professional, Ek has authored multiple books, including an autobiography and works on radio. His inspiration for writing children's books centered around Tucker struck him while watching his granddaughters play with the dog. "I thought that would be kind of a cool thing to do, especially for my granddaughters," he explained.

To illustrate his stories, Ek leveraged AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini, allowing him to avoid traditional illustrator costs. He has self-published five books via Amazon’s KDP program, including titles like “Tucker Goes for a Ride” and “Tucker Goes to the Groomer,” with plans for a total of 12 books.

Ek aims to convey valuable lessons through his stories, emphasizing the importance of supporting local shelters and treating animals as companions.

Sadly, in April 2026, Tucker became seriously ill. After a visit to East Central Vets in Cambridge, the family learned Tucker might have a tumor in his throat. Faced with significant medical expenses and uncertain recovery, Ek and his wife made the difficult decision to let Tucker go. "I miss him so much... I didn’t think I’d have to say goodbye to him quite so soon," Ek reflected.

Tucker’s legacy continues through the books Ek has published and the seven more planned in the series. The books can be purchased online through Amazon or ordered from local booksellers in the Cambridge area.
