Niki Harrison, the director of development and outreach at the shelter, noted that many adult dogs are ready for homes, stating, "They know what they’re doing. It’s not their first rodeo, and they’re just ready to come into your home and find a loving family."
The promotion specifically targets dogs aged 6 months and older and aims to help more adult dogs secure homes while easing the adoption process for families. The unique adoption fee coincides with the start of the shelter's fiscal year 2026-2027, as explained by Harrison.
Currently, the shelter has 28 dogs available for adoption, although this number fluctuates due to ongoing adoptions, surrenders, and strays. Harrison emphasized the benefits of adopting adult dogs, highlighting their established personalities, potential training, and adaptability.
"Adopting an adult dog means you’re getting a pet who has lived in a home," Harrison stated. "They’re probably trained in some capacity and just ready to come into your home and adapt to living with you."
The shelter's initiative includes a variety of breeds, sizes, and personalities, with all adoptable dogs being spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. Interested families can view available dogs on the shelter’s website or visit in person at 800 Southwest Drive.
To accommodate different family schedules, the promotion runs over a weekend, allowing more opportunities for potential adopters to visit. Harrison encouraged individuals to explore the shelter, even if they are unsure about adopting an adult dog, stating, "The addition to your family that you’ve been looking for could be right here and you just didn’t know it." She urged everyone to visit and interact with the dogs, noting that each one has something special to offer.
