K9 Donna, a 7-year-old Belgian Malinois serving with Northside ISD Police, was euthanized on August 11, 2026, following a decision against a $7,000 surgery that could have allowed her to continue working, according to internal records.

Born in Europe in 2019, Donna joined the Northside ISD police department in 2021 after being purchased for $10,000. She was trained as a narcotics detection dog and had served the community for five years. The internal memo announcing her death noted her intelligence and keen sense of smell but did not detail the circumstances leading to her euthanasia.
Documents revealed that Donna was taken to an emergency veterinarian on August 10 after showing signs of vomiting, diarrhea, and an inability to eat or drink. The vet diagnosed her with a small intestine obstruction and recommended surgery. A veterinarian indicated that the surgery would likely allow Donna to return to her duties and lead a quality life for several more years.
After the diagnosis, Northside ISD Lt. Ruben-Richard Tello inquired about options, leading to discussions of surgery costs, alternatives, and ultimately the decision to euthanize her.
Critics of the decision, including Jason Johnson, CEO of Project K9 Hero, argue that the district prioritized financial considerations over the dog's welfare. Johnson expressed disappointment about not pursuing the surgery, stating, "I feel that it was a missed opportunity to do the right thing."
Northside ISD Police Chief Richard Palomo released a statement defending the decision, explaining that it was not made lightly and considered Donna's overall condition and future quality of life. He mentioned a recommendation from an expert that Donna should retire due to declining abilities, implying that the decision was based on compassion and the complexities involved in her medical condition.
At present, Northside ISD Police has two remaining K9s, Gini and Sam. Advocates for working dogs are calling for more robust funding and support for K9 units to ensure proper care in emergencies.
