Mars conducted a global research program on pet adoption that included a survey of 2,000 adults in India aged 18 and older. The findings reveal that 25% of current pet parents who have not adopted are open to the idea of adopting in the future, provided they receive adequate guidance and support.

The survey found that 56% of Indians have had a shelter or rescue adoption experience, surpassing the global figure of 42%. Among those aged 25 to 34, 69% reported having adopted a pet, and 23% of this demographic indicated they are ready to adopt again. However, 44% cited housing restrictions as a barrier to pet ownership, which is significantly higher than the 20% globally.

Working individuals in India are more likely to adopt than their global counterparts, with 54% affirming this, and the figure rises to 66% among the younger age group of 25 to 34. More noteworthy is that 89% of adopters in India change their pet's food after adoption, compared to 71% globally, with nearly half making the switch immediately.

A significant concern for prospective adopters is the uncertainty surrounding a pet's medical history and behavioral traits, with 34% worried about unknown medical issues, 23% about behavior, and 27% about compatibility with their household. This suggests a need for more robust expert advice and support during the adoption process.

In advance of the 2026 Mars Global Adoption Weekend, the study highlights ongoing issues, such as the estimated 69.3 million homeless pets in India. Mars is expanding its initiatives to connect prospective pet parents with local shelters and provide resources through the newly launched online Mars Adoption Hub, which offers expert advice for both pre- and post-adoption stages.

Geeta Seshamani of Friendicoes expressed the importance of keeping adoption central to discussions about pet ownership and collaborating with Mars to foster awareness of responsible pet care. According to Manish Syag, Managing Director of Mars Pet Nutrition in India, improving welfare for pets involves not only facilitating adoptions but also implementing animal health and community education initiatives.

The 2026 Mars Global Adoption Weekend will take place across over 30 countries, with adoption drives held in major Indian cities including Bengaluru, Delhi, and Mumbai. These events, in partnership with local shelters, aim to connect potential adopters with pets in need of homes, underscoring Mars's commitment to supporting animal welfare.
