A recent study has found that cats tend to prefer sleeping on their left side, which researchers believe may provide evolutionary advantages. Led by Dr. Sevim Isparta and Professor Onur Güntürkün, the team analyzed 408 YouTube videos of sleeping cats, selecting clips where a single cat was clearly visible on one side for at least ten seconds. Only original videos were considered, excluding any modified or flipped versions.
The findings showed that approximately two-thirds of the cats observed were sleeping on their left side. The researchers suggest that this behavior may enhance a cat’s ability to perceive its surroundings effectively. When sleeping on the left side, a cat utilizes its left visual field, which is processed by the right hemisphere of the brain. This side specializes in spatial awareness, threat processing, and movement coordination, all crucial for quick escapes from potential dangers.
Professor Güntürkün explained that behavioral asymmetries like this can confer survival benefits. The team concluded that sleeping on the left side could indeed serve as a survival strategy for cats in the wild.
