BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society has gained national recognition and resources to assist its care for neonatal kittens. The organization has been designated a Mightycat partner by the Orphan Kitten Club, a nonprofit dedicated to improving the welfare of kittens in shelters across the nation.

This partnership includes grant funding and supplies to help the humane society provide essential care to kittens that are just days or weeks old. Michelle Epley, operations and foster manager at the humane society, noted that the grant has made a significant impact.

“We have never had the incubators,” Epley said. “The grant that we received supplied three of them, so we are very happy to have this one. This one has actually saved many babies over the last two weeks that we have had it in this room.”

The grant not only includes incubators but also provides formula, crates, playpens, foster kits, and other vital supplies for kittens requiring continuous care. In the past year, the humane society took in 665 kittens under four weeks old, with an average age of two-and-a-half weeks at intake.

Epley explained that the incubators are crucial for maintaining the appropriate temperature and humidity for fragile kittens, and they can also be used for administering oxygen and breathing treatments. “We’ve seen a huge difference,” Epley said. “When we put a tiny kitten in there, it immediately just gets comfortable and goes to sleep.”

The grant will also help the humane society expand its neonatal foster network by supplying foster families with the necessary materials for bottle-feeding kittens in their homes.

Founded by Hannah “Kitten Lady” Shaw, the Mightycat program was created to support shelters caring for kittens from birth to eight weeks old. Since its inception in 2016, the Orphan Kitten Club has allocated over $4 million in grants focused on kitten care across the country.
