PRINCETON, W.Va. (WVVA) - The Mercer County Animal Shelter is approaching its second consecutive week of a "code red" status, prompting a call for community assistance. Currently, the shelter is caring for approximately 100 dogs, with over half of them not yet eligible for adoption. As part of the Bissell Empty the Shelters event, adoption fees are reduced to $25 for dogs and $10 for cats, with microchipping offered at no additional cost. Residents outside of Mercer County and West Virginia are also encouraged to adopt. Additionally, county residents have the option to foster dogs that are already associated with rescue organizations. The shelter regularly updates its Facebook page with information on available animals.
