Hidden Gem Cat Rescue has merged with Seattle Area Feline Rescue (SAFe) to enhance care for vulnerable homeless kittens. This merger, effective October 20, 2025, allows SAFe, a nonprofit no-kill cat rescue based in Shoreline, to expand its capacity to support the needs of orphaned neonate kittens, known as "bottle babies."

Previously, Hidden Gem operated solely from foster homes, focusing on orphaned kittens. By joining forces with SAFe, Hidden Gem's team gains a physical location, which will improve their ability to provide lifesaving services. Additionally, this collaboration introduces a network of experienced caregivers, enhancing SAFe's existing foster programs and community services.

The need for such support is critical, as many unaltered cats produce litters that face high mortality risks if left in the wild. These fragile kittens require round-the-clock care and medical attention. Sam Winchester, Hidden Gem’s former Executive Director, emphasized that caring for bottle babies necessitates patience and resources, and community involvement is essential for their successful recovery and adoption.

Michelle Flowers, SAFe's Foster Program Manager, expressed optimism about increasing the number of orphaned neonates the rescues can save together.

To bolster SAFe's neonatal support during the merger, Svanee’s Foundation will match up to $20,000 in donations for the Bottle Baby Campaign. This initiative aims to further develop the resources dedicated to the care of fragile newborn kittens.

SAFe Rescue is dedicated to taking in homeless cats and kittens, providing them with necessary care, and assisting in finding loving homes. Annually, over 1,600 cats, including seniors and those with special needs, find homes through SAFe. Their commitment to animal welfare extends beyond adoption, offering community wellness clinics and affordable spay and neuter services.
