A recent study has highlighted a curious behavior in cats: they will sit inside the outline of a square on the floor, even if it is just an optical illusion. Historically, studying cats has been challenging due to their uncooperative nature in laboratory settings. Smith noted that many aspects of cat behavior, especially related to their attraction to small, enclosed spaces, are still not well understood. Two informal theories suggest that cats might sit in boxes for comfort or due to their instinct to find hiding spots while hunting.
To investigate further, researchers introduced the Kanizsa contour illusion, which presents a square shape using four Pac-Man figures. The study involved 30 volunteers who conducted the experiment at home with their cats, documenting their observations over six days. Participants received instructions to create three different patterns on the floor: the Kanizsa illusion, a solid square outline, and a control arrangement with the Pac-Man figures facing outward. They recorded their cats' interactions with these shapes, doing so while wearing sunglasses to avoid giving visual cues.
Results indicated that cats showed a preference for sitting in both the illusory square and the actual square outline more than the control arrangement. This research is notable for utilizing non-scientists to gather data, a method that could broaden participation in future studies, according to Kristyn Vitale, a cat researcher at Unity College.
Despite the study's limitations, including a high dropout rate of participants, it aligns with previous findings that suggest cats, much like humans, are affected by visual illusions. Past research, including a 1988 study by cognitive neuroscientist Randolph Blake, also demonstrated cats' reactions to similar visual stimuli in a controlled setting. Blake praised the current study for creatively leveraging the natural behavior of cats, though he acknowledged the challenges of interpreting results from a low vantage point.
