IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - The Kitty Corner Social Club in Iowa City had to close its current location on Thursday night after a structural engineer deemed part of the building unsafe, as reported by owner Katy Brown. The club was originally planning to move to a new location a few blocks away, but the timeline was accelerated due to the building’s condition.

To ensure the safety of the animals, speed adoptions were held on Thursday night. When the lounge closed, there were 21 cats on the premises. Five permanent house cats were relocated, while all 16 adoptable cats found homes by 9:30 p.m.

Jackson Hoewing, an employee at Kitty Corner, noted the outpouring of support from the community as they rallied to help. “Members of the community started calling in and offering help; we were all pretty stunned by this,” he said.

Brown stated that they will be moving to another building located two blocks down on Clinton Street. The relocation was initially scheduled for a later date, but the safety issues prompted an earlier move. The entire front of the current building is set to be removed on Friday morning, and the new location is expected to open in early November.
