The Clean Label Project™ is a nonprofit organization that tests consumer products for hidden contaminants which are not visible on labels. Certification of Freshpet’s recipes began in early 2025, confirming compliance with stringent thresholds for dangerous elements including lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury, and various harmful chemicals.
Scott Morris, Co-founder and President of Freshpet, emphasized the company's commitment to producing high-quality pet food from simple, real ingredients. He stated that the Clean Label Project's recognition validates their mission to provide healthier nutrition for pets.
Recent findings from the Clean Label Project's new Dog Food Category Report indicate that many popular dry dog foods contain significantly higher levels of toxic metals and contaminants compared to fresh and frozen varieties. The report reveals that traditional dry dog foods had, on average, 13.3 times more arsenic, 20 times more lead and mercury, and considerably higher levels of DEHP and acrylamide than their fresh counterparts. In contrast, Freshpet products achieved the lowest contamination levels tested in their category.
Molly Hamilton, Executive Director of Clean Label Project, highlighted the discrepancy in safety standards between pet food and human food, raising concerns about the long-term health implications for dogs consuming contaminated food daily.
Freshpet emphasizes transparency in its ingredients, using real meat, vegetables, and whole grains in recipes that are cooked using methods aimed at preserving nutritional value. The company implements over 20 quality and safety checks throughout production.
The Clean Label Project aims to enhance consumer awareness about product safety by evaluating and certifying the quality of food items. Freshpet, committed to integrity and sustainable practices, remains focused on providing fresh food to over 15 million pet households across North America and Europe.
