Kenora Cat Shelter Treats Senior Cat Taj's Severe Dental Disease

Having lost her owner at the end of May, Taj is adjusting to her new environment. After her surgery, she is now able to eat with less pain. Reagan Johnston, the shelter’s registered veterinary technologist and medical director, noted during her intake exam that Taj had the most extreme case of dental disease she had seen in her eight years at the shelter. Taj's gums were severely inflamed and she had a significant buildup of calculus.

Johnston explained that Taj was experiencing immense pain while eating and could only manage diluted wet food or squeeze treats. Following a prompt examination at the Kenora Veterinary Clinic, it was determined that she would need dental surgery. The surgery took place on September 15, where extensive damage was revealed. All of Taj's teeth had to be either extracted or amputated due to severe infection and dental disease.

Currently, Taj's veterinary bill amounts to $2,301.54, which includes her initial assessment, surgery, and follow-up care. More blood work will be required once her mouth has fully healed, leading to additional costs.
