Shaw emphasized the importance of determining whether a found kitten truly needs assistance. "If a kitten is under five weeks old, they may still be dependent on mom," she stated. Educating the public is crucial to avoid unnecessarily removing kittens from their mothers and transporting them to shelters.
She explained that kittens younger than eight weeks require specialized care, highlighting the need for foster homes. "Those kittens represent the majority of euthanasia in animal shelters nationally because they have really specific needs," Shaw remarked. Her training aims to empower individuals to bottle-feed kittens and assist in TNR efforts to reduce the overall number of kittens entering shelters.
Becca Morris, CEO of the Patty Baker Humane Society Naples, noted that these workshops are tailored to equip community members with the knowledge needed to save more kittens, especially during the height of kitten season. "We are seeing hundreds of kittens coming into our shelters every day that need additional support before they can be made available for adoption," she added.
