Humane Society of St. Joseph County Seeks Home for Norm the Cat

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Norm, a brown and white domestic shorthair cat, is available for adoption at the Humane Society of St. Joseph County after arriving as a stray in December. At approximately 2 years and 9 months old, Norm is known for his affectionate nature. Matt Russell from the Humane Society described him as “super snuggly,” highlighting how much he enjoys cuddling with people.

Despite attending several adoption events, including those at PetSmart, Norm has yet to find a permanent home. Russell noted that while many attendees adore him, he remains without an adoptive family.

Russell described Norm as calm and well-behaved, emphasizing his suitability for a quieter environment. "He’s definitely a very chill cat. We would recommend a chill home for him as well," Russell stated. Norm has shown fear around dogs and loud noises, and he has not been compatible with other cats. Russell remarked that Norm is better off as a solitary companion, favoring a peaceful lap for cuddles.

Health-wise, Norm has no known issues and has gained weight since arriving at the shelter, where he had been slightly underweight. Russell mentioned he is highly food-motivated, enjoying treats and puzzle activities.

The Humane Society of St. Joseph County will hold an adoption event today from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at JCPenney in University Park Mall, although Norm will not be present. Additionally, there will be a rabies clinic in partnership with the South Bend Animal Resource Center on Sunday, Oct. 11, at the 4-H Fairgrounds, offering free rabies vaccines to St. Joseph County residents with prior registration recommended.

Russell reminded pet owners that Indiana law mandates annual rabies vaccinations for pets. The shelter currently cares for around 450 animals, including approximately 90 dogs and 360 cats. They are requesting donations, especially canned cat food, which can be dropped off at their location or purchased through their Amazon and Chewy wish lists.
