A recent study indicates that over 84% of dogs display at least mild signs of fear or anxiety in everyday situations, emphasizing the need for owners to recognize and address these behaviors. Common triggers for fear and anxiety include unfamiliar people and dogs, which are frequent situations for many pets. Dr. Beaver noted that while short-term fear is normal, chronic fear can adversely affect a dog’s overall well-being, leading to health issues linked to prolonged stress, such as negative impacts on the immune system and a reduced quality of life.

In severe cases, the study found that unaddressed fear could escalate dramatically, with some dogs exhibiting extreme distress during storms. "I’ve seen dogs get to the point where they’re so distressed during storms that they try to chew through brick walls just to get into their house," Beaver said.

The study revealed that, although most dogs do not have clinical anxiety disorders, they frequently experience fear and anxiety in various environments. However, these behaviors often go unaddressed during routine veterinary care, primarily because behavior-related issues may not be discussed unless brought up by the owner.

Dr. Beaver advocates for the use of behavioral screening tools during veterinary visits to better recognize and address health and behavior concerns early. Recognizing changes in the duration and intensity of fearful behaviors can alert owners to seek guidance. Unmanaged fear can lead to aggression, especially in dogs repeatedly exposed to uncomfortable situations.

The study emphasizes the importance of monitoring and addressing fear in dogs before it escalates to the point where professional support is necessary. While fear is a natural response in dogs, persistent or increasing fear levels require intervention to ensure their well-being.
