Texas Animal Welfare Alliance Formed to Enhance Animal Care

THLN created TAWA to provide a consistent platform for organizations to communicate, share resources, coordinate advocacy efforts, and align on statewide animal welfare objectives. Kolby Monnig, Senior Director of Government Relations for THLN, stated that Texas has a robust community of dedicated organizations that work tirelessly to protect animals and support their caretakers. He emphasized that TAWA enables these entities to collaborate more effectively and enhance their collective impact.

The Alliance plans to convene regularly to focus on practical collaboration and discuss emerging animal welfare issues, legislative updates, and opportunities for coordinated responses. John Goodwin, Senior Managing Director of Puppy Mills and Equine Protection for Humane World for Animals, highlighted the complex challenges facing Texas communities, such as shelter capacity and the issue of puppy mills. He noted that TAWA presents a vital opportunity to exchange expertise, foster public understanding, and develop responsible solutions for animals and consumers.

In addition to Amarillo Animal Management and Welfare, the initial members of TAWA include organizations such as the Animal Legal Defense Fund, Best Friends Animal Society, and the SPCA of Texas, among others. The Alliance aims to foster a respectful environment where members can share information and collaborate while preserving their individual missions.

Monnig remarked on the diversity of perspectives and expertise brought by each organization, stressing that while there may be differing opinions, the members can still learn from each other and collaboratively address the issues at hand.
