The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center (MCASAC) in Derwood will waive adoption fees on Saturday, August 29, and Sunday, August 30, as part of NBCUniversal Local’s 2026 “Clear the Shelters” campaign. Last year, the event helped more than 100 pets find new homes.

The center, located at 7315 Muncaster Mill Road, will open at 11 a.m. on both days. Earlier in August, MCASAC hosted a Clear the Shelters event that resulted in 54 animals being adopted. Currently, over 150 animals are available for adoption, including dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, ducks, and chickens.
Prospective adopters can learn about the adoption process and view available animals by visiting the MCASAC adoption webpage. The shelter advises reviewing the listings before arriving and having a specific type of pet in mind.
During the promotional weekend, adoptions will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis, with same-day completion. Adopters are encouraged to bring a leash and collar for dogs or a pet carrier for cats and small animals, as pets cannot be placed on hold. While adoption fees will be waived, licensing fees may still apply for dogs and cats.
MCASAC is managed by the Montgomery County Office of Animal Services and serves as the county’s only open-admission municipal shelter. The center focuses on promoting responsible pet care through adoptions, education, and community outreach. Animal Services officers are available 24/7 to respond to complaints and emergencies, reachable at 240-773-5925 during regular hours or via the police non-emergency line at 301-279-8000.
