VIENNA, W.Va. — The Humane Society of Parkersburg held its second Paws at the Mall pet adoption event on Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Grand Central Mall. During this event, attendees had the opportunity to meet five young dogs, including Pepper, an 8-month-old, and Señor Splash, a 4-month-old lab terrier mix, along with his two sisters.

Samantha Tannous, the shelter manager, stated, “We have 5 dogs here today. We’re hoping for them to meet some people and hopefully somebody finds a home.” All the dogs present were described as friendly and social, eager to be out of the shelter environment.

Tannous emphasized that bringing dogs to the mall allows potential adopters to see the animals in a different light than in the shelter. “We have so many animals at the shelter right now, and we understand with so many dogs, it’s easy to walk through and then kind of be overwhelmed. So whenever we can bring the dogs out into the community, you can actually see the dog’s real personality,” she noted. Tannous expressed hope that increased visibility at the mall would lead to more adoptions.

The change of scenery is also beneficial for the dogs. Tannous highlighted that being in a kennel can be stressful and boring, and this public interaction offers valuable socialization for them.

Currently, the shelter has a substantial number of dogs and cats looking for homes. Tannous encouraged those interested to consider adopting or fostering shelter animals. While there were no adoptions finalized during the event, several families showed interest in adopting in the following days. More information about adopting animals can be found on the Humane Society of Parkersburg's website.
