Mars, Incorporated has unveiled a new online Adoption Hub designed to assist prospective and current pet parents as they navigate the pet adoption process. This initiative follows the release of new global research, the largest of its kind, which indicates that nearly a third of potential adopters are hindered by uncertainties regarding pets' health, behavior, and compatibility.

The launch precedes the expansion of the Mars Global Adoption Weekend in 2026, which will now reach over 30 countries, yielding support for a greater number of local shelters than in previous years.
The research surveyed over 26,000 individuals across 14 countries, revealing that while 58% of current pet owners did not adopt their pets, 28% expressed interest in adoption if they received the right guidance and support. Major concerns among potential adopters include unknown medical histories (33%), behavioral issues (27%), and compatibility with household dynamics (25%).
The study highlights the need for improved nutritional advice, with 71% of adopters reporting dietary changes for their pets immediately after leaving the shelter. Esther Bijsmans, DVM, PhD in Pet Nutrition and Health Science at Mars, emphasized the importance of practical guidance for new pet owners, recommending the 3-3-3 rule: a period of three days to help pets feel secure, three weeks to establish routines, and three months for pets to settle into their new homes. Bijsmans also advised a gradual transition to new diets over 7 to 10 days to support pets' digestive health.
Mars' Adoption Hub will provide expert-backed advice and resources aimed at assisting with both pre- and post-adoption challenges. Vice President of Corporate Affairs, Anthony Guerrieri, noted that bringing home a pet should be a joyful experience, not a daunting task. The research indicates that many people are eager to adopt but lack the confidence due to uncertainties about the process.
To ensure the process is as smooth as possible, Mars aims to give clear, trusted information to potential adopters, reinforcing their commitment to facilitating pet adoption and enhancing the welfare of animals. The upcoming Global Adoption Weekend seeks to help more pets find loving homes.
