The Jacksonville Humane Society is reaching out to the community for assistance as it faces a significant increase in kitten rescues. Kittens in need vary in age and care requirements; some may need to be fed every few hours, while others can eat on their own but still require socialization. Occasionally, litters arrive with their mother, and foster homes help create a safe environment for them. Young kittens generally require more supervision and continuous care, whereas older ones can manage with less frequent attention, benefiting from the comfort of a home setting before being adopted.

The Humane Society highlights that families interested in adopting should also consider fostering. Once the kittens reach the suitable age and weight, foster families get to choose their preferred kitten, with the shelter waiving the initial adoption fee.

Lawrence Nicolas, CEO of the Jacksonville Humane Society, emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting, "This is our busiest time of year for kittens, and it isn’t going to slow down any time soon. However, there is no place like Jacksonville when it comes to helping pets in need! We are excited to welcome new volunteer foster parents to this amazing community of helpers and save even more kitten lives this year."

Residents are also encouraged to follow the “Don’t Kitnap” guidance, which advises assessing the situation before removing kittens from their surroundings, as it may not always be in their best interest.
