Dr. Megan Hood from Reicks Veterinary Research and Consulting reported that the study investigates strategies to reduce costs while enhancing biosecurity during transportation.
“During our research, we tested 50 trailers at each phase of the process,” she explained. “After disinfection, none of the trailers tested positive, and similarly, none were positive after our modified drying step.”
Paul Ayers, a member of the National Pork Board and chair of the Swine Health Advisory Committee, emphasized the importance of proper sanitation in minimizing disease risk.
“Effective washing of trailers can significantly lower the viral load and reduce pathogen transmission within the production system,” Ayers stated.
Both experts agree that creating affordable and practical solutions for pork producers is essential for maintaining the overall health of the U.S. swine herd.
