Animal Welfare Department Holds Doghouse Drive for Pets

The Animal Welfare Department (AWD) is organizing a Doghouse Drive to assist pets and their owners as temperatures drop. The department is currently accepting donations of new or gently used medium to large dog houses.

Mayor Tim Keller emphasized community support, stating, “Seeing our neighbors support our city’s pets and their owners is a great example of how Burqueños come together to help each other. This display of OneAlbuquerque spirit helps make sure no one gets left in the cold. Let's work together to keep all dogs safe and warm this winter.”

Donation options include:

- Dropping off a doghouse at one of the following locations:

- Eastside shelter: 8920 Lomas Blvd. NE

- Westside shelter: 11800 Sunset Gardens Rd. SW

- If pickup assistance is needed, contact Captain David Rose at [email protected].

- Custom-built doghouses are also welcome, with plans available through AWA Doghouse Plans.

- Financial donations can be made:

- In-person: Cash or check at either shelter location.

- Online: PayPal or Venmo via the non-profit partner Albuquerque Kennel Kompadres.

- By mail: Send checks payable to Albuquerque Kennel Kompadres at 139 Palacio Road, Corrales, NM 87048, noting "AWD Doghouse Drive" in the memo.

Captain David Rose stated, “This drive helps our Animal Protection Officers restock for Albuquerque’s community doghouse program. These doghouses bring essential relief to both pets and owners needing assistance during the cold winter months.”

The Albuquerque Animal Protection Services reminds pet owners that providing a properly sized doghouse for outdoor dogs is required by law. To assist low- and moderate-income residents, the AWD Doghouse Lottery Program offers free doghouses to qualified applicants.
