Dr. Naomi Esquivel Champions Future Veterinarians Through Chicago Village Bus

Esquivel, who started an animal rescue group at the age of 12, acknowledges the challenges she faced growing up in Little Village, where access to educational resources can be limited. "Born and raised in Little Village, the opportunities aren’t always available," she said. As she progressed through her studies, she became increasingly aware of the disparities between her background and that of her classmates, which motivated her to create pathways for others.

Her initiative, Chicago Village Bus, offers students a firsthand veterinary experience at the University of Illinois. Esquivel explained the program's origins: "I just shot my shot. I was like, 'This is what I think should happen.' There's kids like my younger self out there in these communities, and they just need one chance."

With secured funding and national scholarship recognition, Esquivel aims to ease the path for students aspiring to enter veterinary school. Reflecting on her own journey, she noted, "I think it would have just really lifted a lot of the pressure for me, especially because I didn't see a veterinarian that looked like myself until I got into veterinary school."

Proud of her Mexican American heritage, Esquivel credits her family's support in helping her achieve her goals. She emphasizes the importance of believing in oneself: "I would say keep dreaming, keep dreaming, and keep striving for everything you want to accomplish. The sky's the limit."
