Over 500 Cats Found in California Rescue During Animal Cruelty Investigation

An animal welfare investigation at a cat rescue in California has uncovered more than 500 living and deceased cats. This investigation pertains to the non-profit Furget Me Not Cat Rescue, with findings reported on September 21.

Authorities, including the Inland Valley Humane Society, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and Upland Animal Control, executed search warrants based on allegations of inhumane conditions. During the searches, multiple deceased cats were found inside a garage freezer, while more dead cats were discovered buried in the backyard.

In addition to the cats, nine dogs were found at various properties in Claremont and Upland. Expired medications for humans and used needles were also located at these locations.

Nikole Bresciani, President/CEO of the Inland Valley Humane Society, emphasized the complexity of the case and the priority of ensuring the safety of the surviving animals. The organization is collaborating with local police and animal control officers to assess and care for the remaining animals, a process that is expected to require significant time and resources due to the large number involved. The investigation is ongoing.
