Feline panleukopenia is a highly contagious and potentially fatal virus, characterized by symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea, and vomiting, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association. The shelter ensures that all cats and kittens are vaccinated against the virus upon arrival and receive a booster within two to five weeks.
While no other cats are exhibiting symptoms, the veterinary team is conducting confirmatory testing and implementing safety precautions. The shelter has notified all adopters who may have had cats exposed to the virus.
The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society reiterated its commitment to animal health during this pause. The team will enhance cleaning and disinfection protocols and enforce strict protective measures to minimize illness spread. Cats will remain in their current housing areas.
Adoptions and intakes for dogs and small animals will continue, along with the adoption of adult cats currently in foster care. The shelter plans to reassess the situation in two weeks to determine when cat intake and on-site adoptions can resume.
Community members who wish to assist can donate large towels, hand towels, washcloths, and pillowcases. The shelter also noted that panleukopenia does not pose a risk to humans, dogs, or other animals.
