Two bobcat kittens were brought to the Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center in Roanoke on June 6, 2026, after being found orphaned beside their deceased mother in Russell County. The center confirmed their arrival on Tuesday. The kittens, who are sisters, weighed 505 grams and 510 grams upon arrival.

Since their rescue, the kittens have gained over 100 grams each, now weighing 640 grams and 685 grams. They are currently being fed a diet of formula but are expected to transition to solid food shortly.
Bobcats, the only wild felines in Virginia, can weigh up to 30 pounds and typically prey on animals such as rabbits, squirrels, birds, rats, and snakes. The Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center anticipates significant rehabilitation challenges for the kittens, estimating that the cost will be around $20,000, making it the most expensive rehabilitation effort the center has undertaken.
As the kittens grow, their diet will include one whole chicken per day, costing approximately $10, while later stages of rehabilitation will involve quail and rabbits, with a single rabbit priced at $23.
In addition, due to concerns about COVID-19, staff members must wear personal protective equipment while handling the kittens. To prevent the kittens from imprinting on humans, caregivers must feed them without letting the animals associate food with people.
