Dogs Inc. Seeks Volunteer Puppy Raisers for Guide and Service Dogs

Jenni Scamardo, the Director of Puppy Raising Services at Dogs Inc., highlighted the need for more volunteers during a visit to ABC7 News with Oatmeal, a puppy currently in the program. Scamardo emphasized the vital role that puppy raisers play in preparing these dogs for their future responsibilities. "It is a lot of work. Raising a puppy is a commitment. Without puppy raisers, we can’t fulfill our mission," she said.

Puppy raisers bring the dogs into their homes, where they help provide socialization and foundational skills before the puppies return to Dogs Inc. for further training. The organization offers various options, allowing volunteers to raise a puppy for three, six, or twelve months. Additionally, they can choose to raise a puppy alone, with a co-raiser, or as part of a team.

Dogs Inc. supports its volunteers by providing a starter kit that includes a leash, collar, initial food, and crate, as well as covering approved veterinary expenses. They also offer heartworm and parasite preventatives, along with ongoing training and support that includes puppy kindergarten and monthly classes.

The goal of the puppy-raising program is to expose the puppies to a wide range of experiences to build their confidence and skills as future working dogs.

Interested individuals can learn more by attending an information session on Friday, September 18, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Dogs Inc.'s campus, located at 4210 77th Street East. The session will cover the responsibilities of raising a guide or service dog, the training and support provided by Dogs Inc., and what volunteers can expect during their experience.
