A recent large-scale study has found that brachycephalic queens are more than three times as likely to experience dystocia than their non-brachycephalic counterparts. The study, conducted by Vets Now, documented a total of 1,102 instances of dystocia, representing an overall incidence of 0.93 percent. However, the researchers believe the actual prevalence among breeding queens could be as high as 6.22 percent, as many cases are not reported or treated at emergency clinics.
When analyzed by breed, purebred queens exhibited a 2.53 times greater likelihood of dystocia than crossbreds, with brachycephalic breeds having notably higher risks. Devon Rex queens had a dystocia risk 10.38 times greater, while Tonkinese queens had an 8.27 times risk, Birmans 7.40 times, Exotic cats 6.29 times, and British Shorthairs 3.81 times.
The clinical implications are significant: caesarean sections were necessary in 394 queens, accounting for 35.75 percent of dystocia cases. Additionally, emergency care resulted in the deaths of 38 queens, with 36 euthanized and two who did not receive assistance in time. The neonatal mortality rate was alarmingly high at 38.51 percent among the kittens involved in these cases.
This research underscores the pressing need for veterinarians, especially those in small animal and emergency care, to address the increasing frequency of dystocia in brachycephalic cats. These emergencies pose not only financial burdens but grave risks to both mother and kittens.
Moreover, the study advocates for enhanced education regarding feline reproductive emergencies in veterinary training programs. As the authors emphasized, veterinary practices must shift towards prioritizing health and functional conformations over extreme physical traits.
The ethics of breeding brachycephalic animals are also called into question, as the study suggests that current breeding practices may overlook the severe health implications these animals face. As with brachycephalic dogs, there's considerable evidence highlighting that these cats experience not just cosmetic issues but serious reproductive challenges.
Veterinarians are encouraged to clearly communicate the risks associated with breeding brachycephalic cats to potential breeders. This includes diligent discussions about dystocia risks, neonatal mortality, and the importance of responsible breeding practices aimed at improving health rather than conforming to specific aesthetic standards.
The data from this study serves as a crucial resource for initiating informed conversations with clients and breeders, ultimately aimed at reducing the welfare issues associated with brachycephalic breeds.
