M6toll Supports Birmingham Dogs Home with Funding for Enrichment Paddocks

The funding will be allocated for the development of sensory planting areas within two new Enrichment Paddocks at Birmingham Dogs Home’s rescue centre in Solihull. This initiative focuses on promoting animal wellbeing and enhancing the lives of vulnerable dogs in local communities.

The newly designed outdoor spaces will provide a safe and stimulating environment aimed at supporting the physical and emotional wellbeing of the dogs. These Enrichment Paddocks will incorporate a variety of dog-safe herbs, grasses, and flowering plants, such as rosemary, sage, thyme, lavender, and ornamental grasses.

The sensory planting scheme will facilitate natural behaviors like sniffing, exploring, and scent tracking, offering dogs diverse scents, textures, and colors to engage their senses positively.

Birmingham Dogs Home has reported an increase in dogs arriving at the center with issues such as anxiety, low confidence, and behavioral challenges. While the charity ensures the highest standards of care, access to opportunities for exploration and natural behaviors outside of the kennel environment is also crucial for the dogs' welfare.

The new paddocks are intended to serve as therapeutic spaces that help lessen stress, build confidence, and encourage positive behaviors while dogs await adoption.

Sally Insley, head of income generation at Birmingham Dogs Home, expressed gratitude for M6toll's support, stating that the sensory planting areas will be essential in creating outdoor environments for dogs to explore, relax, and gain confidence. This, she noted, will enhance their readiness for new homes and improve their chances of successful adoption, helping the charity assist more homeless dogs in the West Midlands.

Jo Brett, external communications assistant at M6toll, emphasized the company's commitment to supporting local communities, highlighting their pride in aiding Birmingham Dogs Home and the Enrichment Paddocks project, which aims to provide outdoor spaces that enhance wellbeing and reduce stress for dogs waiting to be rehomed.

Oversight of the project will be managed by Birmingham Dogs Home’s Behaviour and Training Team, who will monitor the paddocks' development and assess their impact through ongoing behavioral observations. The charity aims for this initiative to improve welfare outcomes, decrease the average length of stay for dogs, and increase its capacity to help more dogs in need across the West Midlands.
